What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a medical treatment that enhances the body’s natural healing process through inhalation of 100% oxygen in a chamber where atmospheric pressure is increased and controlled. Under pressure, your blood carries significantly more oxygen than it would breathing normal air — HBOT delivers up to 15 times more oxygen to your tissues than typical room-air breathing.

This increased oxygen supply does real physiological work: it stimulates new blood vessel growth, supports collagen production, helps the body fight infection, and activates dormant cellular repair processes. The treatment itself is safe, painless, and comfortable, with few side effects.

FDA-Cleared Uses vs. Off-Label Applications

The FDA has cleared hyperbaric oxygen therapy for a specific list of conditions. For other uses — including recovery support following traumatic brain injury, a primary focus of our partner institute — HBOT is considered off-label, meaning it is used based on clinical judgment and emerging research rather than a formal FDA-approved indication.

FDA-Cleared Indications Off-Label / Not FDA-Cleared
Air or gas embolism Traumatic brain injury / concussion recovery
Carbon monoxide poisoning Post-traumatic stress disorder
Decompression sickness Long COVID
Crush injury / compartment syndrome Autism

What to Expect

Here's what the HBOT process looks like from consultation to treatment:

1
Consultation
Your provider reviews your health history and goals to determine whether HBOT is an appropriate fit. This initial evaluation with our Medical Director, Matthew Harris, PA-C, is required prior to treatment and carries a $200 consultation fee.
2
Referral & scheduling
If HBOT is recommended, we'll coordinate your referral to Rocky Mountain Hyperbaric Institute in Louisville, Colorado, where your sessions will take place.
3
The session
You'll rest comfortably in the chamber while breathing 100% oxygen under controlled pressure, typically for 60–90 minutes, at RMHI's facility.
4
Ongoing protocol
Most conditions benefit from a series of sessions rather than a single treatment; your provider will recommend an appropriate course.

To further support recovery, some patients also incorporate our guide to contrast therapy alongside their HBOT sessions.
